With an average of 500 visitors every Saturday throughout the summer, the Monroe Farmer’s Market is your one-stop-shop for everything local and fresh. Here’s a taste of what you can expect from the 15-20 market vendors throughout the year:
Fresh Veggies (Asparagus, Beets, Carrots, Cabbage, Corn, Garlic, Green Beans, Shallots, Spinach, Squirrel Corn, Squash, Cucumbers)
Juicy Fruits (Melons, Strawberries, Tomatoes)
Baked Goods (Breads, Sweet Rolls, Pies, Cookies)
And Crafts Galore! (Bouquets, Bees Wax & Soy Candles, Jewelry, Birdhouses)
Shopping at the Monroe Farmer’s Market is a great way to support local farmers and artisans, interact with community members, and keep Monroe dollars in Monroe! The Market is locally owned by twelve local vendors who also sell their products at the Market. All products are grown or made within the Monroe County boundary. The New Economics Foundation, an independent economic think tank, compared what happens when people buy produce at a supermarket versus a local farmer's market and found that twice the money stayed in the community when folks bought locally. And better yet, many varieties of in-season produce are actually less expensive at the Farmer’s Market; this is especially true for cabbage and squash in Monroe.
And there’s another bonus of shopping at the Farmer’s Market: If you participate in the Michigan Bridge Card program, you are eligible for Food Bucks at the Monroe Farmer’s Market. The Market also runs a program called Project Fresh, which provides low-income families and older adults with discounted produce.
The Market is open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. all year round! Located at 20 E Willow St, vendors are set up inside November through May, and move outdoors around June 1st (depending on the weather). The Market is also open on Tuesdays (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) during the summer months.
